Synopsis : Au cœur du Projet Niantic, des scientifiques ont découvert une substance pouvant interagir avec le cerveau humain. Cette substance nommée « Exotic Matter » (Matière XM), existe depuis l’antiquité, influant l’esprit humain et les progrès de l’humanité.

Cette découverte a provoqué une bataille dans laquelle de puissantes nations et organisations s’opposent dans le but d’exploiter cette substance. Cela représente à la fois une opportunité et une menace pour l’humanité.

Dans ce tumulte, deux grandes factions sont représentées et cherchent à contrôler la Matière XM et par la même occasion, le destin de l’humanité : les Éclairés qui voient en le pouvoir de la Matière XM un cadeau qui améliore l’expérience humaine et la découverte, et la Résistance qui la considère comme quelque chose d’hostile qui contrôle l’esprit humain et se tournant donc vers la technologie comme moyen d’avancer.
